Surrey Bacchus Marathon & Half 2018

Surrey Bacchus Marathon & Half 2018

Information and registration

Sunday
9 September 2018

The Surrey Bacchus Marathon and Half Marathon returns – your chance to enjoy England’s premier Wine Marathon with six tasting stations over the Half Marathon and twelve over the full Marathon

Half of the route is inside the beautiful Denbies Wine Estate and the other half through National Trust Countryside and woodland along the Pilgrims Way and North Downs Way. It's a demanding route, but you'll have suitable respite at each of the sampling stations, then at the finish enjoy the party at the hog roast (not included for the children’s run).

New for 2018 we introduce a 5 mile event that you can run, jog or walk. The route will be within Denbies Vineyard, through the vines and offers magnificent views – one wine sampling station will be reached and the hog roast is included. This is a non-competitive activity and will not have timing – just enjoy the day.

RACE HQ

As England’s largest vineyard, Denbies Wine Estate has been producing award winning wines since 1986. It is the first wine estate in the world to give visitors of all ages a unique and fascinating insight into all aspects of the wine producing process, all year round, with indoor and outdoor tours and tasting.

The vineyards of Denbies Estate are situated on the North Downs with its famous chalky soil, in a protected valley of south facing slopes.

The venue has secure baggage, toilets and changing facilities (sorry, no showers). Refreshments are available for purchase from the restaurant and a post-race hog roast will be included in your entry for those in the Full, Half or 5 Mile events. Friends, family and supporters are welcome to spend the day at Denbies with indoor wine tasting, art gallery, farm shop, wine and gift shop and public footpath trails. Entry to the estate is free of charge. The hog roast can be purchased on the day for non-participants.

RACE ENTRY

Finishers of the full and half marathon will be presented with a technical t-shirt (available in small, medium, large or X-large), medal, post-race hog roast and complimentary drink on completion of the race and free digital downloads of race photographs.

Entrants for the full or half marathon are required to be 18 years or above.

Runners and walkers in the 5 miles will reach one sampling station and participants 18 or over can sample one of the wines – those under the legal age to drink alcohol will have a mark on their number but we will have a soft drink available instead). The hog roast is included in the entry fee but the T-shirt is an option at an additional cost of £10.

Children's 2 mile Fun Run – for children under the age of 12 – is a pure fun run, free of charge and no timing but each will get a medal.

START WAVES

There are six start waves starting 15 minutes apart to even the flow of runners on the route and at wine tasting stations. All marathon runners will set off at 9.30am in the first wave followed by five waves of 500 half marathon runners each at 15 minute intervals. You will need to pre-select your wave so that you can be sure of starting with your friends. The maximum number in any single wave will be 500 runners

THE ROUTE

Download a route map here. The route is one lap (half marathon) or two laps (full marathon) and starts and finishes at the marvelous Denbies Vineyard near Dorking, Surrey. The route is undulating (with one significant hill) and multi-terrain with a bias towards road.

Using footpaths along the North Downs Way, you will be guaranteed breathtaking views over the Mole Valley, Ranmore Common and the North Downs.

Marathon cut-off time

So that we can safely manage the route and the drink sampling stations we have been advised we should have a cut off time in the full Marathon of 5 hours. Runners who do not reach the half way point by 2hrs 20mins will be asked to finish at the Half Marathon and will be given a Half Marathon medal. Our 'last person' marshal will start to break down the route 2:20 after the marathon starts and any runners who continue after the cut off are unliley to have signage to follow or medical/drink station support on the route.

Toilets

For 2018 we will have portable toilets at three locations on the route.

Headphones

As we are not running on any Highways, although there is one road to cross in two places, we allow headphones to be used but it is your responsibility to make sure you hear any instructions by marshals. Headphones will be worn entirely at the runner's own risk.
