Open Water Swimming

VO2 Max Racing Events have secured open water swimming at QE2 lake, Woodhorn, on Thursday evenings from 18:00 to 20:00, commencing 9th May 2019.

All swimmers must pre-register on line. All records, in future, will be kept in electronic format and no paper copies will be held on site.

Sign in is from 18:00 at the VO2 desk; there is a simple procedure for signing in and out after swimming. A £3 fee is payable on the night. There will be a safety briefing at 18:25; swimming is from 18:30 to 19:45.

Please do not enter the water or leave without signing in and out, as this may lead to un-necessary emergency action.

Who Can Take Part?

You don't need to be a member of a triathlon club, and provided we know that you are a competent swimmer and meet the ability criteria noted below, you should be OK to train.

Training is split on ability; we have an advanced and an intermediate group, details of which are in the sidebar. There's often a third long-distance group for those training for Ironman or long distance swims. If your ability is unknown to us we may ask that you are assessed before joining in; this may be via the coached sessions, details of which are below.

15 or 16 on or Before 31st December 2019?

The BTF have relaxed the rules for single discipline events such as open water swims so that we can allow 15 year olds (age at 31st December) to compete with adults. This however is with parental consent and of course, full safety cover on the water. As there is currently no organised water safety cover at training sessions we have to insist that people follow these guidelines and swim responsibly.

For children aged 15 or 16 on 31st December to train, we must have written parental consent and there must be a nominated adult swimmer who will be directly responsible for their wellbeing in the water (2 children max per adult). We must also insist that the children and responsible adult swim together as well as following the open water swimming guidelines.

Unfortunately children under the age of 15 on 31st December 2019 are not permitted to swim.

Safety and Rules

Training is at your own risk and you are responsible for your own safety. However, we do set guidelines for everyone to follow, which you should download below and read, and register people in and out of the water, so we are effectively responsible for overall safety. Risk assessments, training rules and emergency procedures have all been agreed with Northumberland County Council who permit us to use the lake, on that basis, for a 2 hour period. There is NO SWIMMING AT THE QE2 LAKE AT ANY OTHER TIME - please respect this condition, as anyone swimming outside of the agreed times will jeopardise the future of all the sessions.

WETSUITS ARE MANDATORY. COLOURED SWIM CAPS MUST ALSO BE WORN FOR VISIBILITY.

Need a Wetsuit?

Wetsuits are mandatory for our open water swimming sessions, and if you plan to enter any open water triathlons or challenge swims in the UK you'll probably find you need a suit. It's a rare UK event where the water is warm enough for wetsuits to be unnecessary!

If you are going to buy one, please visit our swim sponsor Zone 3. We can highly recommend their range of wetsuits and accessories.

If you want to purchase a wetsuit locally check out the Start Fitness store in Newcastle where you’ll find a range of wetsuits on display.

Group Allocation

Advanced / Long Distance Group

You must be able to swim continuously for 1100m - i.e. a single lap of the lake - You must be able to swim at a 400m pace of 08:00 and should ideally be capable of swimming at least 2 laps i.e. 2.2km to allow participation with this group.

Intermediate Group

You must be able to swim continuously for 750m. Swim pace is not critical but you should be able to participate with the group.

Coached Sessions

If you are a new to open water swimming or don't quite meet the standards for our intermediate group you are still more than welcome to swim at the lake, but we recommend that you take some coached sessions prior to joining the main training groups.

We are delighted to once again welcome Barry and Phil Jameson from (Tri4u) and Neil Bowers from (Mvsport) who will lead the coached sessions. Please visit the Tri4U website for more details.
