Now in its 68th year, the Pier2Pier Sea Swim Isle of Wight is a 1.8 mile open water event organised by the Isle of Wight Marlins Swim Club, under the auspices of the British Long Distance Swimming Association (BLDSA). The swim starts adjacent to Sandown Pier and follows the Sandown to Shanklin Bay, a stunning stretch of coastline lined by dramatic sandstone cliffs. The race ends on the beach outside the Shanklin Rowing Club, which is located by the site of the old Shanklin Pier that was destroyed in the gales of 1987. The route takes in beautiful sandy beaches, and the Esplanade walk that tracks the swim route has many lovely cafés - perfect for family and friends who come along to watch, and for a post-swim lunch!
We welcome independent and club swimmers, swim costume and wetsuit* swimmers, and our aim is to organise a friendly, fun event, whilst providing a challenge for all swimmers.
The event is open to swimmers over the age of 18 years, and trophies are awarded for various categories, with a commemorative keepsake presented to each winning swimmer.
The entry price includes refreshments at the end of the race, a goody bag, event insurance, and transportation of bags/personal effects to the race finish.
Why not make a weekend of it? The Isle of Wight has been a popular holiday spot for many years, famous for its mild climate, stunning coastline and fascinating history. More than half of the Island is an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”, and in 2019 the Island and its surrounding waters were designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The Isle of Wight also features in the Guardian’s top 20 list, “Where to go on holiday, 2020; the alternative hotlist”.
Wightlink have kindly agreed to offer a 20% discount to those travelling over from the mainland. A code will be provided with your payment confirmation to enable this to be obtained.

*Please be aware that wetsuit swimmers will be eligible for the relevant wetsuit trophy only, and not the age group and other categories open to non-wetsuit swimmers.
