Kayleigh’s Wee Stars Barra 10k
Saturday 27th May 2017
Oldeldrum Academy
Introduction
Kayleigh’s Wee Stars continues to provide support for families where there is a child with a terminal illness, both in the North East and across Scotland. In the last three years, with the support of our fundraisers and local businesses, we have provided over £300,000 to approximately 150 families.
2017 sees the second of the Kayleigh’s Wee Stars Barra 10k races – and it’s not for the faint hearted! This challenging cross-country 10k will see runners climbing the Barra Hill whilst crossing the site of the Battle of Barra which took place over 700 years ago, and we are hoping to build on this event following the success of the event in 2016.
This year there will also be childrens races organised by Active Schools Aberdeenshire: full information and entry forms are available here.
ENTRIES OPEN ON MONDAY 23RD JANUARY 2017
ENTRIES WILL CLOSE ON THE 1ST MAY 2017
THERE CAN BE NO ENTRIES AFTER THAT DATE AND NO ENTRIES ARE/WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE DAY
We have been fortunate to have the support of many local businesses who are sponsoring this event. All monies raised from this 10K will go directly to the families in need of support. For more information about Kayleigh’s Wee Stars and the support we provide, please visit www.kayleighsweestars.co.uk
The 10k route consists of 2k road, 3k cross country, 5k road. You can see the whole route on Strava here.
The start (and finish) is at Meldrum Academy leading on to the fields at the foot of the Barra Hill. At this point, you will enter the cross country section of the course where extra caution must be taken as you will be running on uneven ground.
The climb to the summit of Barra Hill is about 1km and from there you will enjoy panoramic views of Aberdeenshire. The route then takes you onto the Bourtie Road for a fast, downhill second half road section of the course as you wind back into Oldmeldrum.
The entire route will be well signposted and heavily marshalled.
Price
£18.00 affiliated runners (Scottish Athletics Members)
£ 20.00 non- affiliated runners (This is compulsory and provides you with race insurance for the day)

Parking
Ample parking will be available at Meldrum Academy. We would encourage those who live locally to walk where possible to ease congestion. Marsalls will be on hand in the morning to organise event parking in the following locations :-
1. Meldrum Academy
2. Meldrum Medical Practice
3. Hoodles Childcare
4. Glenrock
5. Within Meldrum Industrial Estate
6. Sureclean
7. Millburn Road
Facilities
We have full use of Meldrum Academy facilities for the morning: changing rooms, toilets and sports hall.
Bag Drop
This year we are introducing a bag drop. When you pick up your race number at registration there will be a baggage strip attached. Simply tear this off and attach it to your bag and take it to the truck trailer where we will safely store your bag until after the race.
Road Crossings for Runners
There are a few road crossings as you leave and return to Meldrum Academy, all of which will be heavily marshalled. However, the roads will not be closed and marshals do not have the authority to stop traffic. The marshals are there to support you, but ultimately it is the responsibility of each and every runner to cross the road safely.
Finisher Goodies
10k - Finishing T-shirt and medal, water, banana and a few other bits and pieces.
Junior Races - Medal and water.
Certificates for all 10k runners can be downloaded from the Results Base website when you get your times.
Wheelchair Entries
Unfortunately we cannot allow wheelchairs to enter as part of the planned route because the Barra Hill is not suitable and is impassable with a wheelchair. However, if you are a wheelchair user, and you are keen to participate, we would love to accommodate you in some way. Please email us on info@kayleighsweestars.co.uk and we will work together to create an appropriate route.
Course Records
Male - Mark Mc Cluskie 38.01 (2016)
Female - Marie Rennie 45.36 (2016)
Sponsors
We are hugely grateful for the support of our sponsors. Their contributions mean that absolutely all of the money raised from this event’s entry fee will be going directly to families where there is a child with a terminal diagnosis. Thank you for your support.
